Jonathan Ward’s performance during the Steelers’ rookie minicamp led to a deal. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the veteran running back is signing a contract with the Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Tuesday that the former Tennessee Titans running back has signed a one-year deal.
The 26-yard-old began his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 after going undrafted from Central Michigan. He was released in November 2022 and later signed with Tennessee.
He spent the last two seasons with the Titans, most recently in 2023. He played in seven games, making a tackle on special teams and accumulating 11 yards on three carries.
Over his career, Ward has accumulated 42 games and 69 running yards on 17 attempts. In his debut season, he also had six receptions for 52 yards and a score. Ward has 16 tackles (10 solo) and one forced fumble on special teams.
He can be a weapon for the Pittsburgh Steelers as Ward plays as a running back and also contributes on special teams.
The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Ward following a rookie minicamp tryout. Behind Jaylen Warren, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Najee Harris, the team boasts a strong running back room. Ward’s special teams abilities are probably what will get him on the club for the season. He may also be used as a backup running back in case someone gets hurt.
Pittsburgh Steelers Hoping To Break Losing Streak In Playoffs
It has been quite some time since the Steelers last won a playoff game.
Head coach Mike Tomlin holds the record for most consecutive non-losing seasons to begin a coaching career with 17 and has never had a losing season.
However, the franchise has not won a game in the postseason since 2016.
Owner and team president Art Rooney II acknowledged in January that there’s a growing sense of urgency to end the drought.
“We’ve had enough of this,” Rooney said via ESPN. “It’s time to get some wins; it’s time to take these next steps.”
