Some viewers have decided not to apply for next year’s season after Sunday night’s dramatic auction.

The Block fans aren’t feeling too hopeful about next year’s season of the reality show after billionaire entrepreneur Adrian Portelli announced he wouldn’t be returning in 2025. The online promotions guru, who is one of Australia’s youngest billionaires, made history during Sunday night’s auction when he purchased all five houses for a whopping $15.03 million.

He then revealed at the end of the episode that he wanted to “go out with a bang” by purchasing Maddy and Charlotte’s house for $3.5 million because it was his “final appearance” on The Block. The decision left fans shocked as Adrian has been a major presence at the past three auctions, bidding on Omar and Oz’s property in 2022 and purchasing three houses in 2023.

Viewers have also begun theorising that next year’s contestants won’t make as much money at auction without the prospect of Adrian bidding on their houses.

“I don’t think we are gonna see these profits again now that Adrian is done!” one person commented on Instagram, while another replied, “My thought exactly!”.

“Next year no Adrian Portelli. No one’s gonna profit anything,” a third added, followed by a different user who said, “I don’t think that type of money will be seen again”.

“I feel for next year’s Block contestants, they will be lucky if they sell the houses now Adrian Portelli’s done with The Block,” someone else remarked.

Others argued that it’s “not worth signing up next season” if Adrian won’t be buying any houses, with one fan writing: “What a bizarre season. Kinda put me and my hubby off submitting our audition.”

The Block’s executive producer Julian Cress announced in July that season 21 will be filmed in the picturesque country town of Daylesford, Victoria.

Eager fans have already taken to Google Maps to inspect the site’s location at 1 Raglan Street and discovered that the houses will be built directly opposite a Mitre 10 – which is coincidentally one of the biggest sponsors of The Block.

“How convenient this site is opposite a Mitre 10, a major sponsor,” one person remarked on social media.

“Very handy having Mitre 10 across the road,” another said, while a third replied, “5 huge houses with pools and right opposite Mitre 10, handy”.

The 2024 season was originally set to take place in Daylesford but was forced to relocate in September – just five months before production was scheduled to begin – due to permit issues and complaints from locals. The show was then filmed in Phillip Island, however, plans have finally been approved for a tree change.

“After a lot of wrangling back and forth, the plans that we submitted to the council in Daylesford were finally approved a couple of months ago, so we’ve decided we’re going to go there,” Julian Cress told TV Tonight.

“We’re going to do the show that we wanted to do [last] year and we’re really excited about [it] because, we think off the back of this kind of ‘seachange’ series that we’re doing in Phillip Island, Daylesford is just a beautiful country town. It’s the number one weekend destination in Australia. So again, I think it’s a town that will resonate with a lot of viewers and as a backdrop for The Block, it’s absolutely stunning and the community there is wonderful.”

Applications opened for next year’s season of The Block in September, however, a production insider tells Yahoo Lifestyle that there’s a chance the cast could be filled with returning faces.

According to our source, the return of fan favourite Blockheads throughout season 20 was being used as a “test” and Nine had been gauging the audience’s reaction to see if they should do a full All Stars season next year.

2024 contestant Courtney, who competed alongside her husband Grant, has already put her hand up to return next year. The furniture designer jokingly tagged her co-star Mimi in the comments on the casting announcement on Instagram and said “Round 2?”, to which she replied: “Styled rooms with no walls? Sure!”

Meanwhile, Paige and Jesse recently told Yahoo Lifestyle that they would be open to giving the experience another try after quitting this season midway through filming.

“I think now that I understand behind the scenes a lot more, I would do it again,” he said. “I’d go back, but I’d definitely do things a lot differently. I’d want to do it with Paige again, but they’d have to know that there are some rules in place from our side. Some boundaries.”

Paige, on the other hand, said she’s unsure whether she’d ever want to put herself back in that situation. “Jury’s still out for me,” she remarked. “We’d have some conversations”.
