The question Olivia Rodrigo’s people requested Aussie media not to ask, probably isn’t one you’d expect!
Olivia Rodrigo wrapped up her Guts World Tour in Sydney last month following a whirlwind 97 shows across four continents over the last eight months. To commemorate the record-breaking run of shows, which has since been named the highest-grossing tour by an artist born this century, the superstar did a surprise press day with Australian media to talk about the tour ahead of her final performance on October 22.
Although all interviews seemed to go smoothly, Kyle Sandilands has since revealed that behind the scenes, Olivia’s team had banned all media outlets from asking any questions on one specific subject. And it isn’t what you might expect.
Question banned by Olivia Rodrigo
The shock jock claimed any mention of Olivia’s on-stage fall during her Melbourne show on October 13, where the star fell through a trap down which had been left open, were not permitted – only for Olivia to later laugh about the viral moment on a US talk show last week.
Kyle said on the Kyle and Jackie O Show, “That was shocking to me that her publicity team banned her from talking to any press in Australia about the only thing anyone wanted to talk about…to save it for Jimmy Fallon at 1:30am in the morning. It didn’t end badly, it could have – but it didn’t. It was very odd behaviour.”
Jackie, who interviewed Olivia solo, defended the star, responding: “I think it was so good of her to even do interviews and we should maybe look at that first. No one else touring gives out interviews [when in Sydney to perform]. She didn’t need to; her shows were fine they were not struggling with tickets.”
Kyle continued: “I’m not poo pooing her, what I’m poo pooing is the idiots who run these celebrities lives. She got a fright [but she] didn’t injure herself, she didn’t get hurt, banning media from asking questions is a bad look.”
Olivia Rodrigo says she’s ‘really happy’ she fell through the stage in Melbourne
Fans around the world were in shock last month when footage circulated online of Olivia falling through the stage at her concert in Melbourne. The 21-year-old pop star was performing in front of 14,000 fans at Rod Laver Arena when she suddenly fell through a hole that clearly wasn’t meant to be there.
Concertgoers gasped as she hit her arms on the stage trying to catch herself, before she recovered and told the crowd: “Oh my God! That was fun, I’m OK! Wow! Sometimes there is just a hole in the stage. That’s alright!”
The Vampire hitmaker spoke about the viral moment during an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote the GUTS concert special on Netflix. While she said the incident is “pretty terrifying” to watch back, she revealed that she now feels thankful it happened to her after having a “beautiful” experience in the hospital.
“It was actually kind of a beautiful thing, and I’m really happy it happened in hindsight,” she detailed. “So I’d just been to the Philippines – that was my next stop, Australia, after the Philippines – and I was thinking about my family and my heritage and my relatives.
“I fell, and I was like all shaken up and I went to the hospital after – nothing happened, but they just wanted to make sure I didn’t have a concussion.”
Olivia went on to share that the nurse was a Filipino man with the same name as her grandpa, who passed away a few months ago.
“And so I was like, wow, that was him looking out for me making sure I didn’t get hurt, and so I’m really happy it happened,” she said.
“That was your grandfather, it absolutely was,” Jimmy replied. “He was like, ‘I’ll take care of you, Olivia. I’m so proud of you, you’re crushing it’.”
