Two years ago, billionaire Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk pledged to sell off his physical possessions – including his real estate portfolio – to focus his efforts on his mission to Mars, tweeting “will own no house” on May 1, 2020.
Swift to action, Musk listed the first piece of his hefty property portfolio the following month.

The new father, who recently welcomed his first baby girl, nicknamed Y, with now-ex Grimes, has since succeeded in offloading all seven homes, worth roughly $US127.9 million ($174 million) with the last sale closing in November 2021.
With mortgages remaining on a few of the properties, records show his profit from the seven sales is estimated at $US25 million, according to Wall Street Journal – a drop in the ocean for the tech mogul whose net worth is reported to be $US221.1 billion.
He now lives in a small, rented ‘Boxabl’ home worth $US50,000 nearby SpaceX’s headquarters in Boca Chica, Texas.
That humble rental was the most Googled celebrity home of 2021, with over 1.3 million searches globally.
Here’s what happened to each of Elon Musk’s seven homes.
November 2021: Historic Hillsborough estate – $US30 million
Musk purchase price: $US23 million
Musk sale price: $US30 million
Buyer: Kirill Evstratov
Musk bought the incredible nine-bedroom, nine-bathroom historic estate known as Guignécourt in 2017, which had belonged to French nobility. He’d described it as a special place and one that would suit a large family.

Located on a leafy hilltop about 20 minutes south of San Francisco and north of Silicon Valley, the Mediterranean-style property sits on a sprawling 19-hectare lot.
The mansion is spread across four levels and has a ballroom, library with a fireplace and a concealed bar, as well as a flower-arranging room, staff wing with six bedrooms and a pavilion with 18th-century Chinese wallpaper overlooking the pool.
The grand home was previously owned by Christian de Guigne IV, whose grandparents built the home in 1912.
Serial entrepreneur Kirill Evstratov bought the property in November 2021, allowing Musk to finally offload the last piece in his property portfolio.
December 2020: Four Bel-Air mansions, LA – $US61.88 million
Musk purchase price: Total of $US54.95 million for four houses
Musk sale price: Total of $US61.88 million
Buyer: Ardie Tavangarian

In 2015, Musk paid $US20 million for a six-bedroom house on a 1.38 hectare lot in Bel-Air through an LLC. That same year, another Musk-related LLC bought a modest ranch house on an adjacent street for $US4.3 million.
A year later, another LLC tied to Musk bought a contemporary mansion three doors down, and then, two years later, a different LLC also registered to the SpaceX headquarters address nabbed the neoclassical Colonial next door.
Luxury property developer Ardie Tavangarian bought the four homes from Musk in December 2020, closing out the year with a package deal that came to a whopping $84.1 million ($US61.88m).
October 2020: Gene Wilder’s former home – $US7 million
Musk purchase price: $US6.75 million
Musk sale price: $US7 million, with a $US6.7 million loan to the buyers
Buyers: Jordan Walker-Pearlman and Elizabeth Hunter
When Musk tweeted about owning no house, there was a caveat: “Just one stipulation on sale: I own Gene Wilder’s old house: It cannot be torn down or lose any of its soul [sic].”
Musk bought the Bel Air home in 2013, which was opposite his main residence at the time. It was believed he wanted to protect his view. The Wall Street Journal reports Musk used the house for parties and that Ad Astra, the school he started for his five sons (a pair of twins and a set of triplets), was registered at this address at one point.
Wilder’s nephew, Jordan Walker-Pearlman, heard about Musk’s plan to sell after a friend sent him a screenshot of the tweets. He immediately reached out to the billionaire’s team about purchasing the home back into the famed late actor’s family.

Musk agreed to sell the house to Walker-Pearlman and his wife, Elizabeth Hunter, for $US7 million after four months of negotiating.
It was a deal that included a “long form deed of trust and assignment of rents,” where Musk agreed to loan the couple $US6.7 million, according to public documents accessed through PropertyShark.
“He could have sold it for so much more,” Walker-Pearlman told WSJ. “His sensitivity to me can’t be overstated.”
June 2020: Bel-Air Colonial $US29 million
Musk purchase price: $US17 million
Musk sale price: $US29 million cash
Buyer: William Ding
After renting a white stucco Colonial mansion for three years, the Elon Musk Revocable Trust bought it in 2012. This became Musk’s main home, overlooking the Bel-Air Country Club (and across the street from Wilder’s former pad).
The seven-bedroom, 13-bathroom spread sits on about 0.7 hectares with its own fruit orchard and also includes a lighted tennis court, five garages, a pool and spa, gym and guest quarters. It was designed in a French country estate style, and has a two-storey library and a wine cellar that holds 1000 bottles.

In June 2020, Musk sold the gorgeous property to an LLC tied to billionaire blockchain investor William Ding, public records show. Ding’s net worth is around $US26 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
