Seattle, sign these guys now!
The Seattle Seahawks are at a crucial juncture in their pursuit of NFL dominance. With the conclusion of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Seahawks have made several promising picks to strengthen their roster. However, key areas still need immediate upgrades to ensure a deep playoff run. Free agency presents an excellent opportunity to fill these gaps with seasoned players. Here, we highlight three free agents who could make a substantial impact: Emmanuel Ogbah, Yannick Ngakoue, and Mecole Hardman. Their addition could be the spark for the Seahawks’ resurgence in the upcoming season.
Reflecting on the 2023 Season
The 2023 season was a rollercoaster ride for the Seattle Seahawks. It ended with a respectable yet ultimately disappointing 9-8 win-loss record. The team had moments of exceptional performance, characterized by fierce comebacks and dynamic plays. However, inconsistency was a persistent issue as well. Their season demonstrated both the potential and the critical areas needing improvement. Missing the playoffs by a narrow margin, the Seahawks showed they are only a few strategic moves away from being serious contenders. The season highlighted the capabilities of emerging talents and veteran leaders alike. However, they had to let go of Pete Carroll. It set the stage for a pivotal offseason.
1/6/24
Here we’ll look at the three free agent players whom the Seattle Seahawks must target after the 2024 NFL Draft.
Emmanuel Ogbah
First on the list is Emmanuel Ogbah. He is a defensive end who can deliver the pass-rushing power the Seahawks urgently need. Ogbah, initially a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, had his best years with the Miami Dolphins. Between 2020 and 2021, he recorded a combined 18 sacks under then-head coach Brian Flores. However, a triceps injury in 2022 limited him to just nine games in his first year under Mike McDaniel. Although he had a decent return from injury, it wasn’t enough to secure his position.
Sure, Emmanuel Ogbah might not have another 10-sack season in him. Still, he could be a valuable asset for the right team. Despite being unsigned, the Seahawks could be interested in his services in the coming weeks.
Yannick Ngakoue
Yannick Ngakoue is another exceptional pass rusher. He should be a top target for the Seahawks. Ngakoue has been one of the NFL’s most consistent edge rushers since his debut. His speed and finesse off the edge make him a formidable defensive asset. Last season with the Chicago Bears, Ngakoue posted 4 sacks and 13 solo tackles in 13 games. Despite some injuries, he demonstrated his ability to disrupt offenses. Pairing him with Ogbah would create a powerful pass-rushing duo for the Seahawks, capable of challenging any offensive line. This combination would be particularly effective against division rivals like the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams. These teams are known for their strong offensive lines and potent passing attacks.
Mecole Hardman
Mecole Hardman, known for his speed and versatility, has struggled with consistency at the NFL level. At 26, he needs to transition from potential to proven production. In a throw-away Week 18 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Hardman stepped up with six catches for 77 yards, showcasing his abilities. Despite a tumultuous 2023 season with team changes and limited impact in New York, his clutch performance in the Super Bowl reminded everyone of his value. However, that was in the past. Now, Hardman needs to prove himself in the present.
Looking Ahead
Signing these three free agents would address some of the most pressing needs for the Seahawks. Emmanuel Ogbah and Yannick Ngakoue would transform a mediocre pass rush into a feared defensive front. They can dictate the tempo of games and forcing turnovers. Their presence would also alleviate the pressure on the secondary. This would allow cornerbacks and safeties more freedom to make plays. This bolstered defense would be crucial in a division featuring elite quarterbacks like Matthew Stafford and Brock Purdy, where every defensive stop can make the difference between victory and defeat.
The 2023 season highlighted both the Seahawks’ potential and vulnerabilities. The 2024 NFL Draft has laid a solid foundation, but it’s the strategic acquisitions in free agency that will determine their success in the coming season. By targeting Emmanuel Ogbah, Yannick Ngakoue, and Mecole Hardman, the Seahawks can address critical weaknesses and transform into a more balanced and competitive team. These moves would not only improve their chances of making a deeper playoff run but also signal to the rest of the league that the Seahawks are once again a force to be reckoned with. The time for bold action is now, and these three free agents could be the key to unlocking Seattle’s full potential.
