“Steph Curry is the closest thing to a God-like figure,” this was how Stephen A. Smith had described the 4x champion when he appeared in 95.7 The Game “Willard and Dubs.” Basketball Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady has a few statements that say otherwise. And it won’t go over well with a lot of people. Particularly, the Dub Nation.
While he is okay with dubbing Stephen Curry the greatest shooter of all time, apparently, the 7x All-Star wasn’t too enthusiastic about putting him in the Top 10. Or the Top 5. “I think Steph has had a phenomenal career … To me, if you’re that great, if you’re gonna be a Top 5, and one your guys are missing and you can’t make the playoffs, I can’t put you in Top 5 or Top 10. I just can’t.”
While it is true that the Warriors missed the playoffs, it would be considered a little over the top to not have the 10x All-Star in the top 10 or top 5 lists by many fans and analysts. For one, this is the first in six seasons that Curry’s played in 74 games, all starts. Since the 2017-18 season, Steph hasn’t played in more than 69 games. The 36-year-old finished the season with averages of 26.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds in 32.7 minutes.
If we were to look at the honors that Stephen Curry was awarded this season, the Finals MVP beat both Zach LaVine and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to grab the Kia NBA Clutch Player of the Year. More recently, he received the honor of being named to the All-NBA Third Team. And that marks the 10th time Steph became part of an All-NBA team – a franchise record. Not to mention, the 26th player in NBA history to get double-digit honors.
So, did Tracy McGrady bite more than he could chew?
Did Tracy McGrady put his own legacy in jeopardy with his comments on Stephen Curry?
McGrady is considered one of the greatest scorers in the history of basketball. Some call him the greatest to never win a championship. The former Raptors forward didn’t play with a lot of superstars in his 16 year NBA career.
Yao Ming and injured Grant Hill were just the two of his biggest supporting cast, who didn’t play with him at the end of their career. Other notable Hall of Fame teammates include Patrick Ewing, Shawn Kemp, and Dikembe Mutombo, who all joined the 7x All-Star at the tail end of their careers.
That’s the reason why he is not criticized much for his major shortcomings. However, now his own comment on Stephen Curry has jeopardized that. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section.
